Hi, I’m Amanda Hernandez, a Broadcast and Electronic Arts student at San Francisco State University pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. As a non-traditional college student, I returned to school in 2022 with a renewed sense of direction and purpose, ultimately finding my calling in journalism.
Before transferring to SFSU, I earned my AA in Journalism from Bakersfield College, where I gained hands-on experience in writing, interviewing, editing, and photojournalism. I also spent time at KGET 17 News as an entry-level web producer, which gave me a strong foundation in newsroom operations and digital storytelling.
Since July 2025, I’ve been working as a radio newscast intern at KQED, where I help produce stories covering education, housing, weather, and social issues such as food insecurity and access to resources. This experience has deepened my passion for public-interest reporting and strengthened my commitment to telling stories that highlight the challenges and resilience within local communities.
While my early journalism work centered on sports reporting, a reflection of my background as an athlete, my focus has expanded to include human rights and social justice. I’m particularly drawn to stories that explore poverty, racial inequity, and mental health, always aiming to tell the stories of those facing these issues.
No matter the topic, my journalistic philosophy is rooted in empathy and integrity, ensuring that every person I interview is treated with dignity and respect. When I’m not in class or in the newsroom, I’m usually out on a run or binge-watching true-crime mysteries like The Alcatraz Escape.
