Aspiring Broadcast Journalist with experience in print and online

Hi, I'm Amanda Hernandez, a Broadcast and Electronic Arts student at San Francisco State University, pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. As a non-traditional college student, I returned to school in 2022 with a new sense of direction and purpose, ultimately deciding to pursue journalism.

Through earning my AA in Journalism at Bakersfield College, I gained hands-on experience in writing, interviewing, editing, and photojournalism. I also spent a short time working at KGET 17 News as an entry-level web producer. These experiences helped me further develop my voice as a storyteller and grow as a media student.

Early in my journalism studies, I realized I was drawn to sports reporting, as I was once an athlete myself. Over the past few years, that interest has grown into a true passion. My most recent work came from my time at the San Francisco Foghorn while attending the University of San Francisco. While game recaps are important, and even essential, I strive to uncover the humanity behind the athletes and develop stories that reveal who they are beyond the game.

As a journalist, I’ve also found myself increasingly interested in topics surrounding human rights, including poverty, racial injustice, and mental health. These are subjects I hope to explore more deeply as I continue on my path in journalism.

Regardless of the story, my journalistic philosophy is rooted in being aware of the sensitivity of others always ensuring that each person I interact with is treated with dignity.

When I’m not in class or reporting, I’m usually out on a run or binge-watching mysteries like The Alcatraz Escape and other true-crime series.
